Abstract

VELEZ RENDON, Juan Carlos. The Local Establishment of the Administration of Justice in Antioquia, 1821-1853. The Difficult Fulfillment of a Republican Promise. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2013, vol.40, n.1, pp.113-143. ISSN 0120-2456.

Traditional historiography of law takes for granted the existence of the State, without questioning the way in which attempts to modernize the legal system were implemented at the local level. The article examines the efforts made to professionalize and differentiate the administration of justice in Antioquia between 1821 and 1853. The approach used seeks to contrast institutional attempts, their limits and the obstacles faced, in order to highlight the conflicts regarding the duties inherent to each position, the practice of professional judges, and the abuses of authority of parish and cantonal judges.

Keywords : administration of justice; Antioquia; professional Treasury judges; parish judges.
