The article addresses the issue of the reconstruction of the judiciary in the department of Santander after the Thousand Days War, focusing on the formalization of the law profession and the greater attention paid to the problem of increasing crime in the department. Thus, the paper provides a perspective on the problems faced by magistrates, judges, and lawyers when attempting to administer justice effectively between 1902 and 1930. In pursuit of this objective, sources published by legal entities, journals, and publications by young lawyers of the period were reviewed, thus making it possible to reveal the intentions and concerns of the actors of the judicial branch. It is clear that there was an almost permanent crisis in the administration of justice and a feeling of helplessness on the part of the citizens, especially the inhabitants of rural areas, in view of a judiciary branch with limited resources and often administered by personnel with scarce preparation in the field of law.
