Abstract

GHIRARDI, MÓNICA  and  RIBOTTA, BRUNO. Poor Health, Useless Bodies. Ailments Affecting the Population of Córdoba, Argentina, according to the 1813 Census. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2013, vol.40, n.2, pp.241-276. ISSN 0120-2456.

From a socio-demographic and cultural perspective, the article addresses the history of the population with disabilities in the urban and rural areas of Córdoba (Argentina) at the beginning of the 19th century. On the basis of the 1813 register, it analyzes the distribution of the population with disabilities, as well as prevalence rates according to sex, age, socio-ethnic status, marital status, and legal situation. Then, using secondary sources, it discusses the attitudes toward disease from the perspective of marriage, family, curanderismo or folk healing, and certain survival and social control practices. The analysis made it possible to identify seventeen ailments and confirm that the position of the sick person in society does not depend as much on the severity of the illness as on prevailing attitudes disease.

Keywords : Córdoba; Argentina; 19th century; disability; disease; population.
