Abstract

HERRERA, MARTHA CECILIA  and  CARDENAS PALERMO, YEIMY. Analytical Trends in the Historiography of Childhood in Latin America. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2013, vol.40, n.2, pp.279-311. ISSN 0120-2456.

The article reviews different historical approaches to the issue of childhood in Latin America. Four trends can be established regarding the institutions assigned to childcare, corrective regimes, school processes, and childhood as an experience. Overall, these trends reveal an imbalance between the approaches suggested in discourses and practices regarding the ways to regulate and intervene in childhood issues, on the one hand, and those approaches that consider childhood as a lived experience, on the other. This imbalance poses the challenge of suggesting approaches that manage to reconcile childhood as a social construct and as experience, advocating a diversification of sources and complementary approaches.

Keywords : history of childhood; historiography; children; Latin America.
