Abstract

JARAMILLO JARAMILLO, JULIANA. Education and Volunteer Associations in Colombia, 1860-1880. Social Demands and Educational Initiatives. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2014, vol.41, n.1, pp.61-90. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v41n1.44750.

One of the current challenges faced by the historiography of education in Colombia is that of going beyond the traditional State-centered approach in order to address the role played by other social actors in the field of education. On the basis of a review of press publications, the article seeks to contribute to the issue by examining the participation of volunteer associations in Colombian educational life between 1860 and 1880. These organizations, whose members came from very diverse social strata, promoted pedagogical initiatives that had an impact on the development of education in the country. Therefore, it is important to study them in order to achieve a richer understanding of the history of Colombian education.
