Abstract

CARO PERALTA, EDGAR ANDRÉS  and  GARCIA PARRA, ALDO FERNANDO. "Truth Lies at the Bottom of a Dark Well". Reflections on the Construction of Socialism in the 20th Century. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2014, vol.41, n.1, pp.277-305. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v41n1.44857.

The article presents some of the historiographical discussions regarding the history of socialism in the USSR, particularly the conception of history as propaganda, some controversial issues concerning the notion of totalitarianism, and the Ukrainian famine. After describing each one of these issues, the article goes on to compare some historiographical studies that reveal the complexity of the phenomenon and the limitations of analytical frameworks based on the claim to a normative history. The paper shows the need to abandon the radicalized positions that have usually been adopted in studies on socialism from both extremes of the political spectrum (the right, liberals, the traditional left), and some trends in historiography.

Keywords : socialism; historical verdicts; truth; totalitarianism; Ukrainian famine.
