CABRERA HANNA, SANTIAGO. Hispanism, Miscegenation and Indigenous Representations During the Fifth Centennial in Ecuador: Vistazo and El Comercio. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2015, vol.42, n.1, pp.213-244. ISSN 0120-2456. https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v42n1.51351.
Certain representations of Indians that appeared in the Ecuadorian press during the fifth centennial are examined. The sources used for this purpose are the Vistazo and El Comercio newspapers; particular attention is devoted to reports on the commemoration and to opinion articles. An analysis of a selection of these sources illustrates the characteristics of the production of images of natives that were inserted into the public memory as an underpinning of the national white-mestizo discourse in opposition to the demands issued on the occasion of the fifth centennial by indigenous organizations. These images were produced with two motivations: to affirm intermixing with Spanish blood and to serve as an ideological and cultural counter to the political demands of the indigenous movement.
