MORAGA VALLE, FABIO. The Glow in the Abyss: the Clarté Movement and Pacifism in Latin America (1918-1941). Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2015, vol.42, n.2, pp.127-159. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v42n2.53332.

In 1919, a group of French intellectuals, Anatole France and Henri Barbusse, founded the Group Clarté! (clarity), in response to the post-war crisis that impacted all areas of Western society. Clarté! publicized its project by means of a series of manifestos summoning the intellectuals of Latin America and the world to follow its example and to form the "International of Thought", a parallel organization to the III Socialist International. Although different and with other objectives, Clarté! was part of the International Socialist Movement, its debates, fortunes and misfortunes. This article discusses, in general and from reception theories, the unequal influence of this movement in some countries of Latin America, its publications, manifestos and debates on its precepts, as well as the reasons for its brief and scarce impact.

Palavras-chave : Clarté!; Clarity; Latin America; intellectuals; pacifism; post-war.
