PEREZ ZAPATA, SANTIAGO. A Glance at the Viceroyalty Mapping: Geographical description of Nueva Granada's 1781 Viceroyalty. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2016, vol.43, n.1, pp.61-91. ISSN 0120-2456. https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v43n1.55065.
The Geographical description of the Nueva Granada Viceroyalty (1781) results from the visits undertaken by José María Campuzano y Sanz, Mayor of Tunja, and Francisco Moreno y Escandón, criminal prosecutor and protector of the Indians, to the parishes and neighbors of the government of Santa Fé de Bogotá (Northern part), and to the jurisdiction of Tunja and the provinces of Socorro and Pamplona, between 1777 and 1779. This study attempts to reconstruct the history of the map as a two-fold means of interpretation: 1. Understanding the cultural profile of the two principal authors, Francisco Moreno y Escandón, and Francisco Javier Caro; and 2. Identification of the social and political tensions that motivated the visits undertaken in said plan.
