This work analyzes Jaime Jaramillo Uribe's interest in and approach to colonial demography. It analyzes the ideological bases of his particularly low estimates of the native population during the European invasion of the 16th century and his emphasis on its rapid decrease and substitution by the so-called mestizos. The author argues that in the 1960s, Jaime Jaramillo Uribe was committed to the ideology of "progress", "development" and "modernity". In that context, the panorama in which mestizos and not the indigenous population predominated projected a society which facilitated the advocated changes. The author suggests that this could also be understood from a similar perspective, called "New History" in its time.
