Abstract

The article offers a rereading of Jaime Jaramillo Uribe's Historia de la pedagogía como historia de la cultura (History of Pedagogy as History of Culture) given as a lecture in 1952 and published in 1970. As Jaramillo was the initiator of the social history of education genre with his Manual de historia de Colombia (History Manual of Colombia), also published in 1970, the article questions the existence of continuity or discontinuity between the history of pedagogy and that of culture, and how this tension is assumed in the work of Jaramillo. The author notes that Jaramillo's work contains various meanings for the term "culture", from the "spiritual" dimension to the "material" dimension, the former inspired by Dilthey and Durkheim and the latter by Marx and Weber. The article proposes a hypothesis to initiate the exploration and explanation of this polysemy, starting with the various layers of knowledge in the Colombian intellectual setting between 1930 and 1960.
