Abstract

LEAL, BERNARDO. Tell Me Where You Come from and I Will Tell You Who You Are: Social Classifications in the Provinces of Santafe, 1550-1635. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2017, vol.44, n.1, pp.147-176. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v44n1.61222.

The article offers an approach to the network of terms used to classify and identify the populations of the Indies. The inquiry is based on sales letters, asientos (work agreements) and one example of a causa deamparo (work related dispute) deposited in the First Notaries of Santafe and Tunja, and the Fondo Negros y Esclavos at the Archivo General de la Nación, between 1550 and 1635. This was the time of the establishment of the Royal Court and the appointment of the first scribes and officials, responsible of legitimizing the slaves' sale processes and conciertos de trabajo between Spaniards and Indians.

Keywords : social cartography; classification; slavery; race; terminology.
