Abstract

VANEGAS, ISIDRO. Constitutionalism and Revolutionary Imperatives: Popayán, 1808-1815. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2017, vol.44, n.1, pp.199-222. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v44n1.61225.

The author explores the emergence and development of the constitutional ideal in Popayán during the first neo-Granadian republics. Although this province fluctuated between independentism and loyalism, the insurgent leaders also shared a fundamental trait of the neo-Granadian revolution: the constitutionalist vocation. The leaders believed that their provinces, as the rest of the New Granada, needed constitutions to finally conclude the desired transformation.

Keywords : New Granada; democracy; Constitution; monarchy; revolution; independence.
