After the independence of the Spanish colonies in America and during the boom of the plantation system in Cuba, the Spanish reformer Ramón de la Sagra proposed a series of economic and social reforms for the island, including the progressive abolition of slavery. The article discusses these proposals, highlighting the political implications, as the author sees them as a solution for the future and continuity of the colonial regime in Cuba. For this, the author examines de la Sagra's writings from 1820 to 1840, integrating his ideas on the island with the rest of his work and looking at the different stages that de la Sagra goes through to highlight how he accommodated slavery in each one of them.
