Abstract

PULIDO LONDONO, HERNANDO. Cultural Politics: the Historiographical Production on Latin America in the First Half of the 20th Century. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2017, vol.44, n.1, pp.363-391. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v44n1.61231.

The author explores the notion of cultural politics in recent historiographical production on Latin America in the first half of the 20th century. The text proposes four argumentative steps: first, it considers the conceptual bonds between "politics" and "culture"; second, it highlights the actors, institutions and processes that constitute the objects of historical investigation; third, it examines some relevant historiographical discussions; and, finally, it addresses complementary concepts such as "hegemony", "nation" and "identity", along with the outstanding sources and methodological positions. The literature studied explores the historical relationships between politics and culture during a period of intense urbanization, industrialization and massification of Latin American societies, in which the links between "national cultures", political projects and social conflicts were relevant.

Keywords : 20th century; culture; historiography; cultural politics; Latin America; cultural identity; nation.
