From the perspective of cultural history, this paper analyzes human waste management and the control of bodies in the city of Valparaíso (Chile), and, particularly, the impact this had on the bourgeoisie. To that effect, the article focuses on two episodes. The first is the conflict between public and private sectors caused by the implementation of a new waste management model based on the use of sewers, which modified the notion of cleanliness and urban decency in Valparaíso at the end of the 19th century. The second episode highlights the new bourgeois sensibility regarding the use of toilets at the beginning of the 20th century, a practice that the bourgeoisie utilized to distinguish itself from the lower classes, and it is analyzed on the basis of a deeply symbolic event: the implementation of public bathrooms to address the needs of the population affected by the 1906 earthquake.
