This theoretical reflection article carries out a critique of the political economy of scientific measurement as exemplified in the analysis of the impact factor as a measure of scientific quality. It explains the social and cultural mechanisms involved in the construction of these hegemonic ways of thinking and acting, and warns against the serious consequences of this global project for the de-institutionalization of local science and the emergence of an independent national science. Said consequences are especially serious in the case of the humanities and the social sciences.
