Abstract

CHAPARRO SILVA, ALEXANDER. "There Is a Time for Everything". Temporality and History during the Monarchical Restoration in Tierra Firme (1814-1819). Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2018, vol.45, n.2, pp.205-231. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v45n2.71032.

This article analyzes the construction of historical time by the royalists during the monarchical restoration in Tierra Firme (1814-1819). It shows how the reinvention of the monarchical order's legitimacy implied the existence of a particular regime of temporalities and historicities where the conceptual changes of the period were inscribed. First, the cohabitation of various meanings of temporality is explained, in particular, the acute sense of acceleration manifested by contemporaries and the complex relationships between experiences and expectations in this period. Second, the writing of history by the monarchists is discussed from two concrete examples: the first histories of the crisis of the Hispanic monarchy in Tierra Firme and the debate over the conquest of America and the legacies of the Hispanic colonization. Finally, some general reflections are presented.
