The article provides a definition and characterization of the strangers' guides published in Spanish America from the second half of the 18th century to the end of the 19th century, on the basis of a three-part classification of those publications: the imperial model, the erudite model, and the commercial model. This organization makes it possible to understand the guides as part of the process of formation and consolidation of printed matter in the continent, in a social, cultural, and political context that lasted approximately 120 years. The main approach used in the article is that of cultural history, and, more specifically, the history of printed matter.
