Abstract

GARCILAZO, ROMINA. Corruption Scandals Depicted by the Press. The Provincial Bank of Santa Fe (Argentina) during the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2019, vol.46, n.1, pp.209-230. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v46n1.75558.

The article analyzes the corruption scandals depicted by the press during the 1890s in Santa Fe, Argentina. To that effect, we focus on the scandal involving the Provincial Bank of Santa Fe, one of the most dynamic public-private banking institutions in the province. On the basis of some of the concerns that guide the "new" cultural history of corruption and the studies that focus on the link between scandal and journalism, we organized the study according to the following issues: the role of the press as promoter of scandals; the manner in which journalism represented corrupt practices; and the conceptions and terminology used to refer to corruption. The article's main contribution is analyzing the concept of corruption from new perspectives, in a little explored setting such as the province of Santa Fe during the second half of the nineteenth century.
