The article presents and attributes to Francisco José de Caldas a heretofore unknown map that had been incorrectly catalogued in the General National Archive (AGN, according to its acronym in Spanish), in Bogotá. The first section justifies the attribution by means of two arguments: the theme and outline of the map, which coincide with those of the incomplete Provincias Unidas de la Nueva Granada, and the fashion of depicting mountains, which are typical of Caldas' late cartography. The second part includes a chronological and progressive study that explains the reasons of Caldas' unfinished cartographic production. Using his scientific memoirs, other maps, and Caldas' correspondence during the period 1795-1816, the article explains the circumstances leading to his reluctance to draw up the general map of the New Kingdom of Granada, which he began as late as 1811 and never finished, despite having announced it since 1796 and having been commissioned to draw it by the end of 1805.
