Abstract

The article argues that corrupt police practices were the result of everyday negotiations by agents responsible for maintaining urban order, and its main objective is to reflect on the historicity of the term "corruption", which has been used more to disqualify than to understand the relations between police power and urban society. To that effect, it analyzes police practices in Mexico from the late 18th to the mid-19th century, on the basis of two cases that make it possible to reinterpret corruptive practices as the result of informal arrangements between police agents and urban actors. The first case has to do with the judicial proceedings against a neighborhood mayor towards the end of the Colonial period, while the second has to do with the abuses attributed to a police chief who extorted the neighborhood.
