The article discusses the notion of police in Michel Foucault's writings, both in the books published during his lifetime and in the courses and texts published after his death. It shows how the scattered references to that issue throughout his books find an articulated formulation in his courses, which constitute a sort of brief treatise on the police during the 17th and 18th centuries: its object, its boundaries, and its antinomies. Furthermore, it highlights the relevance granted by the author to the police dispositif of those centuries, insofar as it shaped, especially due to its antinomies, the rationality that still grounds our thinking of politics. Finally, the article underscores the importance of Foucault's analysis of the police for the concept of biopolitics.
