In 1674, a large group of nuns of the convent of Santa Clara, in Trujillo, Peru, declared that they were possessed by the devil. Based on documentation from the Tribunal of the Holy Office in Lima, the article analyzes the details of the extraordinary event. It discusses and explains the meaning of the devil in Colonial society and some of the possible causes leading to the demonic contagion in the Trujillo convent. Finally, it clarifies the confrontation between Franciscan and Dominican friars, which became evident in the trial against the nuns Luisa Benítez and Ana Núñez.
