Abstract

GARAVITO, Aarón; MONTES, Enrique  and  ESGUERRA, María del Pilar. Exports to Venezuela: evolution and effect on the exporting scenario and Colombian firms (2000-2012). Lect. Econ. [online]. 2013, n.79, pp.73-111. ISSN 0120-2596.

This paper analyzes the dynamics of Colombian exports to the Venezuelan market, the characteristics of the firms that ship goods to this destination and the dependence of their revenues on sales to Venezuela. The results show that the Venezuelan market shipments affect the evolution, structure and destination of Colombian exports. Thus, its evolution has partly responded to the business cycle in the neighbor country and to the binational diplomatic relations. Also, the characteristics of the group of firms that participates in this market has changed according to the situation of trade between the two countries. Finally, for a sample of firms, the Venezuelan market is one of the main international destinations for their products, but does not represent the majority of their sales, which takes place mostly in the domestic market.
