Abstract

DAZA-TORRES, Martha Constanza; OVIEDO-OCANA, Edgar Ricardo; MARMOLEJO-REBELLON, Luis Fernando  and  TORRES-LOZADA, Patricia. Agroenvironmental systems selection for using compost from municipal biowastes. Acta Agron. [online]. 2015, vol.64, n.2, pp.134-145. ISSN 0120-2812.  https://doi.org/10.15446/acag.v64n2.43977.

Municipal Biowastes (MBs) represent the biggest fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Composting is a promising alternative for its management, due to its ability to produce a stabilized product (compost) with agronomic value that helps to keep soil properties. Prior selection of Agro-environmental Systems (AS) with potential to use the compost allows addressing the composting process aiming at the production of a material that fulfills the quality requirements of AS. This paper evaluates the implementation of a methodology in order to select AS, considering environmental, technical, socioeconomic and institutional variables. The study was carried out in a municipality of Valle del Cauca Department - Colombia, which has a Solid Waste Management Plant (SWMP) with a composting process for the treatment of MBs. The results permitted to identify SA with higher potential to use compost from MB, which were: coffee, livestock grassland, and degraded land. The proposed methodology application might allow operators from biowaste composting setting up, strategic planning processes, contributing with its improvement and sustainability.
