Abstract

Erosion, pollution and vegetation loss are some of the negative effects of alluvial gold exploitation. One of the biotechnological strategies currently used to reduce the impact of this practice is restoration by means of plant growth-promoting microorganisms. The main purpose of this study was to determine the growth and adaptation of Leucaena leucocephala in soils degraded by alluvial gold in Istmina, Chocó (Colombia), through inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense, Mortierella sp. and Rhizoglomus fasciculatum. Under greenhouse conditions, simple and combined inoculations were carried out in bags containing 15-day-old seedlings. The following variables were taken into consideration: height, dry mass of the aerial part, radical dry mass, foliar phosphorus and mycorrhizal colonization. The results showed that there was a significant promotion (P<0.05) in shoot and root dry weight and foliar P concentration with single and dual inoculations of R. fasciculatum with A. brasilense and Mortierella sp. with A. brasilense, with respect to the control. The triple inoculation did not present better results than those achieved with the dual inoculations. These results show that the inoculation of these microorganisms individually and/or combined has a beneficial effect on the nutrition and growth of Leucaena, so this practice is recommended to increase its development and establishment in restoration programs for soils affected by alluvial gold mining.
