CALERO BRAVO, Gisella Katiuska et al. Effect of the chemical characteristics of two acid soils on the application of three edaphic amendments. Acta Agron. [online]. 2023, vol.72, n.4, pp.209-216.  Epub 04-Nov-2025. ISSN 0120-2812.  https://doi.org/10.15446/acag.v72n4.106387.

Soil acidity is a critical factor that limits agricultural yield and represents one of the main forms of soil degradation. To address this problem, it is essential to apply amendments that can restore optimal soil conditions. This study evaluated the impact of 3 soil amendments -calcium carbonate (CaCO3), ash, and biochar of plant origin- on the chemical properties of the soil, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), and soil organic matter (SOM), in 2 locations in the province of El Oro, Ecuador. A factorial experiment was conducted using completely randomized split-split plot designs, evaluating 297 containers with 250 g of soil in each location. An intergroup factorial analysis of variance was applied to determine the presence of statistical differences between amendments at different incubation times. 3 types of amendments were applied at 11 increasing doses, over 3 incubation periods, and with 3 replications. The results showed that the application of agricultural lime significantly increased pH levels in potassium chloride (KCl) in both locations. The addition of ash resulted in an increase in electrical conductivity, thereby improving the overall soil fertility. The use of agricultural lime was particularly effective in increasing organic carbon and organic matter levels in location 1, whereas in location 2, biochar showed a positive impact on these same properties. These findings underscore the importance of both chemical and organic amendments in the potential correction of soil chemical properties, presenting them as viable alternatives to improve soil health and increase agricultural yields.
