MAVOLO, Luca; DAVID-RIVERO, Ezequiel Ricardo e BOTTA, Guido Fernando. Evaluation of grain loss in a new structure of the shield of the sunflower harvesting header (Helianthus annuus L.) in the confectionery hybrid. Acta Agron. [online]. 2023, vol.72, n.4, pp.338-345. In confectionery-type sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), it is important to consider the characteristics of the harvesting header, as this implement presents the highest percentage of loss. This paper attempts to demonstrate that a shield with a flat height structure, which takes into account the crop’s unevenness, reduces grain loss. It also examines whether variations in the advance speed significantly impact grain loss in confectionerytype sunflowers. The tests were conducted on an NTC 99 CL hybrid using a Mainero 1040 harvester header. Four treatments were tested: a flat polycarbonate shield and the original header shield, each evaluated at advance speeds of 5.0 km/h and 5.5 km/h. The score showed no significant differences between treatments evaluated at the same speed. However, the total grain loss was significant in the polycarbonate shield at both advance speeds. Increasing the speed from 5.0 km/h to 5.5 km caused a significant grain loss. Conclusion: the use of a flat shield, of greater height and of material with a lower elastic modulus impacts the sunflower head uniformly, which causes less shelling at different speeds.
