ALARCON, Z. K; JUYO, V y LARROTTA, J. A. EPIDEMIOLOGIC CHARACTERIZATION OF ZOONOTIC GASTROINTESTINAL PARASITES IN DOGS WITH OWNER OF THE URBAN AREA OF LA MESA, CUNDINAMARCA. Rev. Med. Vet. Zoot. [online]. 2015, vol.62, n.1, pp.20-36. ISSN 0120-2952. https://doi.org/10.15446/rfmvz.v62n1.49382.
The aim of this study was to characterize zoonotic gastrointestinal parasites in dogs with owner of the urban area of La Mesa, Cundinamarca. A type survey census was carried out for determining the real population of canines: 1142 dogs; only 897, those offering complete information, were included in the study. A total of 122 canine fecal samples were taken and analyzed through concentration of formalin-ethyl acetate and read by microscopy. The overall prevalence of parasites was 19.67% (24/122). Ancylostomides were the parasites found more frequently (17.21%), followed by Trichuris spp. (1.63%) and Giardia spp. (0.81%). Compared with other studies in Colombia the prevalence found was lower and there weren't cases of multiparasitosis. The presence of parasites in dogs did not show relationship (P > 0.05) with the studied variables (race, age, sex, deworming, vaccinations, drinking water supply and dwelling place). In conclusion, the presence of parasites represent a risk to human and animal health, so it is necessary to implement health and education strategies for La Mesa community and to develop deworming plans and parasitological diagnosis for pets.
