Drug dependency in our specialty represents a big occupational problem, because it involves the drug addiction in the labor scope of the anesthesiologist, with drugs whose responsibility is to administer to his or her patients. These situations can derive in a process of progressive decline from the physician in its standard of life and health, being one of the risk aspects with higher impact for the health of the anesthesiologist. In it can interact diverse factors like the genetic predisposition, psico - social and biological factors, family and personal history of abuse, chronic stress labor (Burnout Syndrome) easy access and availability of the drug in the work area. It can generate personal, familiar and labor consequences. The personal ones are related to a progressive deterioration in his or her life and health status, syndrome of abstinence, relapses, psychiatric disorders as depression, and suicide attempt and even death by suicide and overdose. The familiar ones are related to a high incidence of divorces and family disruption. Labor consequences include incapability to develop the habitual tasks, probability of medical errors, malpractice and abandonment of the specialty. Faced to the suspicion, identification and intervention must be made: including the victim in a treatment program. In front to this reality, we must assume the concept of shared responsibility from a triple perspective: the anesthesiologist, the scientific and union societies, and the institutions which provide the jobs, in order to avoid or make lower these risks.
