Abstract

FIGUEIREDO, Olívia Maria. The Metaphor as a Textuality Factor in Ensaio Sobre a Lucidez by José Saramago. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2006, n.19, pp.73-101. ISSN 0120-338X.

The Metaphor as a Textuality Factor is a reflection on how the language system is made operational in discourse. In this case the way idiomatic expressions (compound expressions) are transformed again into metaphoric expressions (componential expressions) in the literary work Ensaio sobre a Lucidez is studied. The analysis focuses on the assessment of how an idiomatic expression recovers its creative power or its original drive which brought it into being. Within the framework of the (expanded) theory of anaphora and reconceptualization, it is shown that such a restructuring takes place throughout the literary work in a process of cognitive widening, whereby recourse to implicatures is a necessary feature to understand explicatures. What is required is for the reader to choose the right context to understand the conveyed sense. And the conveyed sense is but the questioning about the relation between man and the world by the widening of metaphoric scenarios which can only be established through language.

Keywords : Metaphor; Idiomatic Expression; Anaphora; Reconceptualization.
