Resumen

RAMIREZ CRUZ, Héctor. SEDENTARISM OR NOMADISM? METAPHOR IN THE CONCEPTION OF LIFE IN EVERYDAY SPEECH. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2007, n.20, pp.147-172. ISSN 0120-338X.

This article looks at the use of metaphorical expressions by men and women. By means of a reconstructive analysis of metaphors with the goal of identifying the fundamental conceptual metaphors men and women live by. As part of Critical Discourse Analysis within the study of genre, the study aims to unveil the power relationships between men and women, or structures of power that are generated by the society in order to maintain a given social order. The corpus included 20 stories gathered by students in the Master's Degree Program in Linguistics at Universidad Nacional de Colombia during the first semester of 2004. It included narrations by 10 men and 10 women of an important event in their lives. Orientational, ontologic, and conceptual metaphors of feminine and masculine genre are examined and relevant differences are established following the guidelines by Lakoff y Johnson (1980) as well as former studies in the field.

Palabras clave : metaphor; vernacular; study of genre; critical analysis of discourse; nomadism; sedentarism.
