Abstract

OSPINA BOZZI, Ana María. Hints towards the comprehension of the relationship between the yuhup language, culture and society: an ethnolinguistic perspective. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2008, n.21, pp.189-226. ISSN 0120-338X.

This paper presents an ethnolinguistic overview of the yuhup community by analyzing the way language, society, and culture are related. A contextualization of this relationship is outlined by means of a summary of the research carried out, a description of the cultural and linguistic environment of nomad communities in the Northeast Amazon, and an evaluation of research on these communities. Social and cultural aspects of the yuhup community are dealt with taking into account linguistic data, their recent history, their occupied territory, and their categorization of plants, animals, and spatial notions.

Keywords : ethnolinguistic investigation; the Yuhup; nomads of Northwest Amazon; sedentarization; language; culture and society.
