Abstract

VILLA NAVIA, Ruth Alejandra. SIMULATION OF RURAL SPEECH IN 1814. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2011, vol.24, n.1, pp.61-74. ISSN 0120-338X.

The basis of this article is an anonymous folio containing a monologue publicly pronounced by an alleged peasant in the Colombian capital on January 30, 1814, in which the peasant encourages Latin Americans to continue struggling for independence and criticizes the supporters of the Royalist cause, especially the inhabitants of Popayán. The article provides an annotated edition of the document, as well as an analysis of the most relevant phonetic, grammatical, and lexical traits, which are typical of spoken language at the beginning of the 19th century in Colombia.

Keywords : Colombia; educated speech; rustic speech; 19th century.
