The article presents the results of a qualitative research project in the field of urban semiotics, which addresses the meaning given by the average citizen to the public space of the market in downtown Bucaramanga. The results are the product of the relation between semiotics and the urban phenomenon, on the basis of a research process supported by the ethnographic method. Specifically, discourse and its semiotic analysis were used to unravel the meaning given by the average citizen to public space, in this case, that of downtown Bucaramanga, Colombia. Work was carried out between 2007 and 2009.
