Abstract

ARIZA, Miguel. DIAGRAMMATIC THOUGHT AND NARRATIVITY. A SEMIOTIC AND MATHEMATICAL ARTICULATION. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2012, vol.25, n.1, pp.147-167. ISSN 0120-338X.

The relationship between narrative and mathematics has a long history. The purpose of this paper is to show the specific modes of linkage between them, despite the dissimilarities they may appear to have. It discusses Italo Calvino's 'algebraic combinatorial' narrative articulation (which employs Greimas's model, not to carry out semiotic analysis but as a model to generate writing), as well as Claude Berge's diagrammatic novel, Who Killed the Duke of Densmore? The analysis makes it possible to understand the transition from a semiotics of action to a semiotics of event, through a diagrammatic relational model whose mathematical construction is proposed by the author.

Keywords : diagram; mathema; presupposition relationship; semiosis.
