The article is devoted to the study of the different cognitive mechanisms that give rise to a range of meaning effects in the realm of communication, when operating upon different cognitive models (either alone or in combination). Such effects constitute the so-called figurative uses of language, such as irony, paradox, hyperbole, etc. For this purpose, the article suggests taxonomies of both cognitive models and cognitive operations, on the basis of various classificatory criteria, as well as a set of regulating principles that constrain the activity of cognitive operations.
