Abstract

MONTOYA AVILA, Angélica. THE IMPACT OF LINGUISTIC POLICIES AND PLANNING ON THE LINGUISTIC ATTITUDES OF COLOMBIAN STUDENTS. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2013, vol.26, n.1, pp.237-260. ISSN 0120-338X.

Abstract It has been demonstrated, in diverse contexts, that linguistic policies and planning have had an impact on society and its members, particularly on their attitudes toward the languages they come into contact with. This factor becomes fundamental in education. In Colombia, a series of policies established that Colombian citizens would be bilingual by the year 2019, for which reason Spanish-English bilingual education has acquired great prestige and linguistic attitudes toward English have become increasingly positive. Those measures have also fostered the idea that English is a tool that can be acquired at school. However, this impact and its possible relation with other international cases has not yet been studied in depth.

Keywords : linguistic policies; linguistic planning; linguistic attitude; bilingual education.
