The focalizing ser ("to be") is a recurrent syntactic feature in Colombian Spanish and it has drawn the attention of scholars of our country and other countries where it has been evidenced; because of this, it has been selected as one of the linguistic variations to study in the Sociolinguistic Atlas of the Colombian Spanish - ASLEC. In order to show the progress made in the study of this variable, the present document introduces a state of the art on it as well as an preliminary statistical analysis in order to study the focalizing ser ("to be)" in Ciudad Bolívar - Bogotá, where its pilot stage takes place. This proposal includes theoretical - methodological guidelines for the study of the variable and some reflections emerged from the preliminary statistical analysis of a corpus collected in this locality in 2010 by members of the research team.
