Communicative-functional studies have considered impersonalization mechanisms as a deictic gap or as defocalizers of the deictic center. Nonetheless, this work is inspired by previous approaches concerning impersonality as an extension of deixis. It consists of a variationist study of the different degrees of generality expressed by uno in the Caribbean variety of Spanish spoken in Barranquilla, Colombia. Based on the concepts of textual, discursive and social deixis, it incorporates linguistic factors related to degrees of impersonalization (referential interpretation, discourse type, and verb semantic class), as well as pragmatic factors concerning power and solidarity relations (polarity, type of interaction, forms of address, and relations among interlocutors). The results provide statistical evidence about the personal use of uno with the deictic functions of yo. It stands out when the speaker expresses her/his positioning on what is being stated, that is, one's deictic center, one's personal experiences, knowledge, evaluations and feelings.
