Abstract This paper presents an analysis of the system of exemplification in school dictionaries used by high school students in Colombia. To that end, three dictionaries were selected and, based on them, a limited but representative number of entries and definitions to be analyzed, was chosen. Finally, the examples of each dictionary were examined. The analysis of the examples had three objectives: to establish the representativeness of the examples in the dictionaries, to determine their function(s) in each dictionary and, finally, to analyze the characteristics of the examples as well as their coherence regarding the social and linguistic context of the Colombian student.
