Abstract

LOPERA MEDINA, Sergio Alonso. THE ANALYSIS OF FISHING FOR COMPLIMENTS. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.1, pp.77-94. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v30nl.62412.

This article analyzes the fishing for compliment strategies and gives a linguistic description. Note taking was used as the instrument to gather data; nine samples of fishing for compliments were analyzed. Based on the classification given by Adachi (2010), four samples of boasting strategy were found. The other five samples were grouped into a new category: social commitment strategy. The linguistic analysis found that the speakers use exclamatory sentences, suffixes, adverbs, and interjections that help intensify the illocutionary force of the compliment. Some words that belong to parlache (slang) were also found. As well, speakers alternate different forms of address in a turn and self-politeness is used. Finally, compliments appear in different moments of the interaction and both men and women produce compliments.

Keywords : analysis of fishing for compliments; social commitment strategy; boasting strategy.
