Abstract

TROUCHON-OSORIO, Alba Lucía  and  GUERRERO-UCHIMA, Inés Gabriela. TRANSLATION OF IRONY IN RELATION TO THE FLOUTING OF CONVERSATIONAL MAXIMS IN A LITERARY TEXT. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.1, pp.95-116. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v30nl.62414.

The concepts of Nord's functionalist approach (1997), Hatim's discourse analysis (1997), Barbe's notion of irony (1995) and Brown and Levinson's off record strategies (1987) provided the theoretical basis for the research reported in this article. The compilation, delimitation and analysis of the corpus were carried out with an empirical-descriptive methodology within a qualitative approach. The analysis of the data obtained was conducted from a semantic and pragmatic perspective. As a result, it was found that the translation of irony, identified in the source text by the participants, was preserved in the target text precisely in those cases in which the flouting of maxims was also kept. It was concluded that flouting is a valid resource to convey irony in the translation of a literary text.

Keywords : irony; ironic utterances; conversational maxims; translation; off record strategies; expressive function.
