Abstract
GUERRA LYONS, Jesús David and HERRERA BONILLA, Marggie. COMMITMENT IN APPRAISAL THEORY: CONCEPTS AND PEDAGOGICAL APPLICATIONS. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.2, pp.51-69. ISSN 0120-338X. https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v30n2.65787.
The article examines the concept of commitment in the Appraisal Theory set forth by Martin and White and some of its pedagogical applications. From the perspective of Bakhtin's dialogism, Martin and White define commitment as the set of resources through which language users enter into dialogue with the multiple voices that inevitably permeate their texts, accepting or rebutting them, taking them up or distancing themselves from them. Commitment is divided into two types: monoglossia and heteroglossia. The latter, in turn, includes several subcategories defined and illustrated with examples drawn from Davies' corpus of Spanish. Through the review of studies carried out mainly in Latin America, the article also discusses some pedagogical applications of the concept of commitment.
