Abstract

OLAYA PERDOMO, Noel. MIGUEL ANTONIO CARO’S LATIN WORK. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2018, vol.31, n.1, pp.9-32. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v31n1.70440.

This article focuses on Miguel Antonio Caro's Latin work. It starts out by discussing the teaching of Latin during the Colonial period and the educational reforms implemented at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the republican period, which promoted the teaching of modern science without eliminating the humanities completely. The paper then focuses on Caro himself, highlighting aspects of his biography, especially his self-education. It emphasizes the conceptual and methodological contributions of his Latin Grammar, written in collaboration with R. J. Cuervo, and provides a detailed overview of his literary production: the translations of classical authors such as Vergil, Horace and Tibullus, his renderings of modern and contemporary poets, such as Fray Luis de Leon and A. Manzoni, and, finally, his own poetry.

Keywords : Miguel Antonio Caro; Latin language; Latin grammar; translation; poetry.
