Abstract

CARRETERO, Abigail; MORA, Juliana De la  and  MALDONADO, Ricardo. THE EVALUATIVE TAMPOCO: A SUBJECTIVE MARKER OF INADEQUACY IN MEXICAN SPANISH. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2018, vol.31, n.2, pp.51-68.  Epub Oct 18, 2022. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v31n2.74655.

It has been pointed out that in today's Spanish, tampoco features pragmatic values of the mitigating or emphatic type in addition to its adverbial value, which connects two negative statements and has an adversative function. The article identifies an additional evaluative value that highlights different pragmatic levels of inadequacy regarding a prior statement that contradicts the speaker's point of view. The analysis focuses on usage in Mexican Spanish, on the basis of data obtained from a corpus, as well as from spontaneous oral discourse. The proposed analysis shows that the evaluative use of tampoco derives from its adversative use, but also identifies pragmatic and discursive restrictions that make it possible to call certain statements, attitudes, or assumptions inadequate if they enter into conflict with established situations or specific conceptual frameworks.

Keywords : evaluative marker; pragmatic marker; negative disagreement; subjectivization; pragmaticalization.
