The article focuses on the use of the verbs ser and estar by Francophone students of Spanish as a foreign language (ELE) in Quebec. The correct use of these verbs is difficult for students whose language has an attributive verb system different from that of Spanish, due to grammatical, lexical-semantic, and pragmatic factors, as well as to the changing nature of language. The article provides a diagnosis of the learning process of this specific grammatical feature and shows the usefulness of error analysis as a line of research. It also demonstrates that observation of the learners' interlanguage and the analyses of their productions make it possible to identify the difficulties, determine their causes, and understand the interlanguage phenomenon. All in all, our results indicate that most of the errors are of an intralinguistic type, as they are found in the system of Spanish.
