VARGAS MANRIQUE, Pedro José. REPRESENTATION OF SOCIOCULTURAL ACTORS IN THE CHRONICLES OF THE "CONQUEST" OF THE INDIES. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2019, vol.32, n.1, pp.53-80. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v32n1.77413.

The article examines the representation of sociocultural actors in ten chronicles of the "Conquest" of the Indies in order to show the conception of and difference between colonizers and colonized peoples. The theoretical and methodological basis for the study is Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), particularly Van Leeuwen's model of representation of social actors. Nvivo and T-LAB 7.5 textual analysis tools were used to carry out a lexico-semantic analysis of the selected chronicles. Findings show that European colonizers represented themselves by using proper names, honorifics and position titles, while the pre-Hispanic peoples were represented through categorization and assimilation. This means that the former were described on the basis of personal, human, and "civilized" traits, while the latter were conceived of through abstractions, generalizations, and homogenization, i.e. characteristics that dehumanized them.

Palavras-chave : Critical Discourse Analysis; Van Leeuwen; sociocultural actors; assimilation; categorization; nomination; representation.
