Abstract

FERNANDEZ GARAY, Ana. SYNTACTIC COMPLEXITY: MULTIVERBAL CONSTRUCTIONS IN TEHUELCHE. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2019, vol.32, n.2, pp.91-108. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v32n2.80816.

In this article, we analyze the multiverbal constructions (MVC) existing in Tehuelche, an indigenous language spoken in southern Argentina, on the basis of a corpus registered among Tehuelche speakers. Among them, we discuss serial verb constructions (SVC) and those that include dependent verbs, that is, those with an inflected verb and a non-finite one. These constructions act as single predicates and generally share the subject. The analysis is framed within the typological-functional perspective, on the basis of a corpus gathered in successive stages of field work among the Tehuelche people of the province of Santa Cruz.

Keywords : Tehuelche; syntactic complexity; multiverbal constructions; serial verb constructions; auxiliary verbs.
